Friday Review #2: dead sexy edition

October 9th, 2009

It’s Friday.  Oh, happy day!

As you may know, last Friday was our first ever Friday — in review!  It is the beginning of a few rituals that are bring into our zone of operation those most important practices.

I call our rituals Aquaducts because, you know, of how much they are like aquaducts.

And we are also trying on a Tuesday Styles for size – because your style is not just about image or artfully messed up hair.  It can be a means to the end of you reconnecting with YOU. Which, if you ask me, is what it’s all about.

On to the week in my rearview and the Hard Stuff, and the Good Stuff. If you want, you can join me.

Hard Stuff:

  • Oh, the whole money thing. What a drag.

Let’s say, hypothetically, I was approached to help a hot shot lawyer to set up his social media & teach him how to use it (if someone could get back to me before tomorrow, that would be awesome).

I also need to (hypothetically) explain how to steer clear of the legal pit falls (this, I know how to do; my inner paranoia cyclone drove me to fully vet all of the legal implications with regards to the professional code of responsibility for lawyerstranslation: blah blah blah lawyers).

The big question has been – what do I, you know, charge him? I hate this part of everything and have to work on my issues around this all of the time.

I cannot tell you how often clients tell me I do not charge enough – well, I guess I can. It’s often!  But my whole thing is I don’t want that to stand between me and someone who I could help… to which the healthy-minded say, it is more respectful for you and for them to charge what you’re worth & it also increases your value to them.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Plus there’s the whole gender complication, about how women make like 5 cents an hour and men make millions or some gross income gap like that. This makes me want to batter up a little more, but still. Ew.

I am actually in a better place about it after talking with a fabulous friend, and another fabulous coach friend who I trained with and with whom I discuss all things foodie and vinophile (thanks, Tonya!). (Aside: T & I are thinking of taking coaching on the  road to wine country everywhere – join us!)

So, I’ve got a game plan, numbers I feel comfortable with (having polled all of North America) and I know what’s “market” – so I’m good. But this little bugger of an issue, how much to charge, will be revisiting our fair blog. This much I know.

If you have money thoughts – put ‘em below. All comments welcome!

That was kind of the only real thing this week.

Oh, there was one other thing – I direct messaged a friend for her to retweet something that was relevant to her people, and she did not respond, and I made that mean she-hates-the-thing-I-sent-her-and-me, but then I worked on that thought and NOW I feel good thinking, she is just being herself (either she didn’t see it, didn’t feel like it, etc.) and that feels better for me. So it’s cool.

Good stuff:

  • I have a radio sponsor! Well, sort of. Okay, FINE! I am VASTLY exaggerating.

I think it’s more like they will feature my business one morning and include a link on their website.   They love what I do to help people and want more people to find me. How neat are they!

My best friend from growing up (we’ll call her Susan because she’s too shy to be  featured), well, Susan’s mom, who is awesome and has a great haircut, totally hooked me up with this. She’s such a connector!

Here’s a story: Susan’s mom was strict when we were growing up.

Por ejemplo:  All we listened to in the car when she drove us around, even in the teen years, was Rafi and We Sing Silly Songs and sometimes Simon & Garfunkel and the Beach Boys.  Good music — but you know what I’m saying. She was not mean-strict at all, the kids were just sheltered (as was I – there are worse things).

My mom (hi, mom!), being fairly strict in that way, too, meant that Susan and I spent a lot of time together growing up (playing the back yard and not watching television) because our moms trusted each other’s vigilant supervision.

(Let me add that all of the kids in both of our families turned out great, in very traditional ways – banker, budding neuroscientist, doctor, lawyer – so that’s food for thought. Neither here nor there.)

Susan’s mom and my mom took a trip to visit me in NYC last holiday season. I organized drinks with my NYC friends to welcome them. It went very well, and Susan and my mom were total hits.

My good (gay) South African friend told me that he thought Susan’s mom was dead sexy.

And Susan’s mom found out because, when Susan visited, she met the South African friend, and he said, “OH! I know your mother! She is dead sexy.” How funny is that?

  • Remember the Dane Cook post?  Well, I emailed it to him, and he emailed me back! Pretty cool, huh? He said, (and I quote):  =   )

All I’m going to say is, I don’t usually see smiles like that. I’m more of a :  ) girl, myself.

But he’s found his truth, and it looks like his truth has an equal sign for eye balls.

  • Hee-larious dinner with more new friends. You know how meeting people is one of my things. Well, meeting people I like is even better!

As an aside – the whole youificaiton thing is fundamental to finding these people that you really truly like. The more you bait your hook with YOU out there, the more you catch your people.

And, in my experience, they support you more when you want to lose weight/quit smoking/change careers than the people that are friends with the fakerson version you. Just saying.

  • I’m going to start hip hop class! FUN. And: FUNNY.

And that is my week in review.  I love this.  You guys, try it once and see how it feels – it is SUCH a useful way to reconnect and be conscious of you living your life. Which is the only way I want to live mine.

Of course if you don’t feel like trying, you can still hang out.

Happy weekend! Keeeeses!
