About Me
You came to this page because you want to know a little bit about me.
The “Official” Bio
I am certified as a life coach with “the best-known life coach in America,” New York Times bestseller and O Magazine columnist Martha Beck. Martha is both hilarious and brilliant.
I’ve practiced law in Manhattan since 2006. I earned my J.D. with honors no less (I’m as surprised as you are) from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. I have a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia and I joyfully run my coaching practice with a completely virtual team.
You can get free advice from me every day and all hours of the night at my blog – but my best giveaway type stuff is in my Newsletter.
Twitter? Oh, do I. Follow me at @LaurieGay, on Facebook (who doesn’t love trolling through other people’s pictures) or on LinkedIn.
A Bigger, Badder Bio…
I figured out a few years back that, without any of the usual identity categories (profession, role in the family, achievements), I am a coach.
I said to a friend, “I wish I could do what I do best with my friends – talk to them when they feel stuck, get them through it and feeling fabulous.”
Friend looks puzzled. Friend replies, “Um, that is a job – it’s called a life coach.”
And that is who I am. That’s why I love doing this work. That is my truth – that I am a coach no matter what my job title says.
Once I knew what work naturally suits me, the rest was gravy. Well, a lot of blood, sweat and tears … and gravy.
- Getting trained and certified over 9 months while still working at Simpson Thacher in NYC…
- Overcoming all of the many, many times that to be actually doing work that I love felt impossible…
- Hammering out my own business that, to my amazement, is very successful…
And much more. It has been nothing if not blood, sweat and tears. And, of course, gravy.
Here is one thing that this process taught me, that I know for sure:
- I could not have done it without support. Friends, coaches, family and imaginary friends – you need all of the quality human beings you can find to make amazing things happen.
Once I relied on a network of support from awesome people, things really started moving for me.
To be that support to as many people as possible, I offer my blog, and through it, my experiences and lessons learned. Sometimes, there is group support through various classes I offer. And for a select few, there is individual work.
It’s all to get you into work that’s natural for you, that you love — and help you grow as your right career path grows.
A Moment of Pause for the Term “Life Coach”
I know what you are thinking. ”Life coaching” sounds lame. Yeah, you’re right. The term “life coach” could not be lamer. We can call me something better (I’d definitely be into that) so let me know if you come up with a cool name.
The actual thing I do, which is getting you feeling really good now, plus also we get you everything your heart desires, is something I think we can both agree is sooooooo not lame.
Feeling better, doing more, and having/giving lots = why you want me as your life coach.
UPDATE: Recently, I decided to that what I really do is you-ify. I help you figure out what you in job form looks like. Youification! You know it.
Things I’m Into
It’s all about food – cooking it, eating it (at home, in new restaurants, at parties), talking about, getting creative with it. I love anything and everything to do with amazing food and wine, particularly when it’s cultivated in a sustainable way.
Gotta have my personal practice. I am very committed to yoga, pilates and, most recently, dance classes. Exercise is central to me feeling like myself and staying in the groove. And I will only, until the end of time, do exercise that I enjoy.
Music, music, music. There is no more constant interest of mine than music. Nothing changes my mood or speaks to me on as many levels as songs by talented artists. Currently, I’m loving the Ruby Suns and Kid Cudi, but I’ll always have a soft spot for the the Boss and the Beatles.
Fashion. A passion. Not just what’s “in style”, but it’s what people on the streets are wearing. It’s when you get dressed to express yourself (whether you’re male, female or any combination thereof) and then, you feel alive. It’s freaking fantastic.
Traveling. I love to explore, especially places that I’ve never been to before. I have some favorites (Portland, Austin, Stockholm) that I revisit but usually prefer exploring what to me is, as yet, unknown.
My friends and family. This is going last on the list, but fits first in my life. Before work or anything else, goes my relationships. I won the lottery when it comes to my amazing, amazing friends, and I love my family beyond words.
Enough about me. What do you think about me?
